Smokeless powders, or propellants, are essentially mixtures of chemicals designed to burn under controlled conditions at the proper rate to fire a projectile from a firearm. Smokeless shotshell powders are made in two forms: thin, circular flakes or wafers, extruded kernels (small cylinders and spherical (small spheres or discs).

Single-base smokeless powders derive their main source of energy from nitrocellulose.
